Maddie The Shih Tzu

Steph Gamlen, Owner & Head Dog Groomer, Sirius GroomingLittle Maddie the Shih Tzu dropped in this week for a bath, trim and a tidy up. She’s a gorgeous dog and so well-behaved on the groomer’s table. We both had a lovely time together for a few hours.

After she had a quick brush, bath and dry it was time for the scissors to come out. Maddie’s owner wanted a short and tidy cut to help keep her looking trim. Her coat was in good condition, so that’s what we did. She looked much prettier afterwards and her wagging tail said she thought so too.

Poor little Maddie suffers from ‘beard stain’ around her face and this leads to the discolouration you can see. It’s usually caused by a yeast in the saliva called Ptyrosporin and can be tricky to clear up. This time around it was just a tidy up but on Maddie’s next visit we’ll look at some more specialised treatments to try and help with the stains.

Shih Tzus should not be bathed too often as they have natural oils in their hair that can become dry and cause skin irritations if bathed too regularly. Every couple of weeks would be fine. As with most dogs, regular brushing and home grooming is necessary to keep the coat free from tangles and matts. Luckily for Maddie, her coat was in good shape.

If you have a Shih Tzu in the Weston Super Mare area, give us a call to go over some of the treatments we have available. If they’ve not been fully groomed for a few months, it could be time to think about getting them a pamper session. Give us a call today and see if we have any last-minute appointments.
